About this postcard
The Kunstakademie, or Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, is an iconic building situated in the historic city centre, between the Brühlsche Terrasse and the Frauenkirche. It was built between 1885 and 1894 by the architect Constantin Lipsius and is now the headquarters of the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (HfBK), the city’s art college. The building is also known as the ‘Lipsiusbau’ and houses the Kunsthalle, a temporary exhibition space run by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Saxon State Art Collections). The academy was founded in 1764 and has been home to famous professors and students, such as Caspar David Friedrich, Oskar Kokoschka, Otto Dix, and Gerhard Richter. The building is a symbol of Dresden’s artistic history and remains a central venue for the creation and teaching of the visual arts.
